When to travel

  • Kyrgyzstan is a wonderful country to visit throughout the whole year. In recent years, the Kyrgyz government has continuously extended their highways to link up cities around the whole country.  These highways make it safe to travel throughout the year so that you can visit different historical and cultural landmarks.

  • Summer is the best season for hiking and trekking.  While it can get uncomfortably hot inside cities like Bishkek, its nearby mountains and forests offer much cooler temperatures.  You can trek up to different mountain peaks that range from a height of 2,000m to 4,000m above sea level.

  • During the winter, you can visit ski resorts near Karakol (a city on the eastern shore of Issyk Kul Lake).  There you can go skiing and enjoy other winter activities, or simply relax and enjoy the majestic sight of the snowy ridges.

How to get there

By Flight

  • The fastest and most comfortable way to reach Kyrgyzstan is to fly to the Manas International Airport in Bishkek. There are daily flights from major Eastern and Western European cities (e.g., from Moscow, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg, Istanbul), Asian cities (e.g., from Urumqi) or Middle Eastern Cities (e.g. Dubai). If you are coming from Russia or other Central Asian countries, there are a number of flights per day.  If you wish to fly to Osh (southern part of Kyrgyzstan), only flights from certain Russian and Central Asian cities are available.  Taking a flight via Almaty (Kazakhstan) will give you more choices in flying to different cities within Kyrgyzstan.

By Train

  • Taking the train into Kyrgyzstan is less accessible than taking a coach.   94% of Kyrgyzstan is covered by mountains, which makes construction and management of railway extremely difficult to build and maintain.

  • Although you may be able to find cheap train tickets, but be aware that this is a much slower and less convenient option.

  • Currently, there is no railway network connecting Tajikistan and China.

  • You can check the train schedule

By Bus or Marshrutkas (minibus)

  • Taking a coach is the most affordable option for entering into the Kyrgyzstan.  It is also the option that gives you the most choice, since almost every major city in Central Asia offers a coach into Kyrgyzstan.

  • However, be aware that different cities have different schedules, for example, there are Marshrutkas leaving Almaty to Bishkek every hour, but in Tashkent (Capital city of Uzbekistan), there are only 2 buses to Bishkek and they leave only in the evening.  Online Bus schedules are almost non-existent, so you should go to the bus station to check the schedule in advance, or you can check with some local tourist companies.

By Car

  • Unless you have done lots of research and are very familiar with Central Asia, driving across borders is not highly recommended. Poor road conditions in some remote areas (especially during the winter when roads are covered in snow and ice) make driving extremely dangerous and you may get stuck at the border since different land border controls have different operating hours.

  • For example, the “Ak Jol” border (between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan) operates 24 hours, whereas the “Torugart” border (between Kyrgyzstan and China) operates only from 10am to 4pm.
